Swapping these inefficient, pollution-ridden lamps out for renewably-powered solar lighting has never been easier or more effective thanks to the social entrepreneurs behind the WakaWaka Solar Lamp. Developed by Off Grid Solutions and touted as the single most efficient solar lamp on the planet, the WakaWaka Solar Lamp not only has sustainable sponsored lamp program for retail sales, they’re now launching some amazing non-profit partnership programs to make distribution easy and extremely effective. Given WakaWaka’s goal to deliver their lights to 1.5 billion people worldwide living off the grid, these programs should be a big step forward for them!

The WakaWaka Solar Lamp’s Many Opportunities for Involvement

Kerosene lamps, while functional, have caused nothing but trouble for those living at the bottom of the pyramid. Kerosene is relatively expensive for those living in extreme poverty and extreme polluting. While many charities have tried to encourage the shift to solar, other disappointments have prevented widespread adoption. The high cost of buy-in, charging capabilities, and energy storage disappointments have left many disillusioned with the idea of solar lighting. This is especially true for non-profits working in communities where wasted investments can have a devastating impact on levels of trust.

The WakaWaka Solar Lamp sidesteps these challenges easily by providing exceptional performance in even the most demanding conditions. It’s durable, lasts for 16 hours with a full day’s charge, is water resistant, and has five light modes making it extremely practical. Plus, it’s powered by three rechargeable AA batteries (included), making it easy to use for years and years.

Solar Lighting for the Energy-Poor Just Became Cost-Competitive with WakaWaka

So WakaWaka has solved functionality problems with solar lighting. Now they’re working on making them super affordable for those living in darkness. To start, Off Grid Solutions donates $10 to the WakaWaka foundation for every WakaWaka purchased on the Wakawaka4light site. The WakaWaka retails for $49.00 but is available on the Wakawaka4light site for just $39.00 including free shipping. Anyone can take a WakaWaka Solar Lamp home for themselves, and as a result, they’ll trigger the sponsorship of two WakaWaka Solar Lamps to families living without light!

But WakaWaka is going even further by offering two non-profit pricing programs to further reduce the costs of their lights. The direct-to-non-profit pricing program provides low minimum purchases (4 case packs or 96 WakaWaka Solar Lamps) for registered 501 C3 organizations. The per-unit costs of this program make WakaWaka Solar Lamps extremely affordable for non-profits that either donate lamps to families or offer them at a subsidized rate.

Further yet, WakaWaka will offer non-profits that sell WakaWaka Solar Lamps to their constituents a way to fundraise by retailing the WakaWaka Solar Lamps using a host of provided tools – landing pages, email templates, and web-based marketing solutions. This program allows non-profits to earn credit applicable to future WakaWaka purchases at non-profit pricing.

To further sweeten the pot and boost non-profit collaboration, WakaWaka’s programs will encourage two or more non-profits to work together to purchase their lamps with even lower per-unit pricing. A non-profit that takes advantage of both programs plus the collaboration incentive can easily finance the purchase of thousands or millions of lamps for nearly nothing.

To learn more about how qualified non-profits can take advantage of Off Grid Solutions’ programs for non-profit organizations, you can contact Victor Brandstetter, Senior Partner Digital Concepts 2.0 at victor@wakawakalight.com or 925-437-8345.

So when games like Tilt World and virtual farming systems like Farmhopping get released by green entrepreneurs for would-be naturalists, we’re happy to see them doing real good, even if they’re supported virtually by the users.

Tilt World Helps Gamers Battle Deforestation

Like other remote yet real-world games of years past, Tilt World, the mobile game, was created by green-minded programmers to give gamers the chance to help fight deforestation and climate change. The game narrative revolves around the fight against a green blight that is swallowing Shady Glen. Flip, the hero, must eat the carbon and rescue the seeds from the blight.

The game is played with simple tilts of an iPhone or iPod Touch. Players move between landscape and portrait to guide Flip toward pollution and seeds and away from the evil, toxic blight. There are 15 levels of gameplay goodness through which you must solve 3 sets of puzzles to earn enough Tilt Points to clear the blight from soil, water and air.

Winner of several awards – Best Game iPhoneDevCamp 2007, Wired Magazine’s Top 9 Hacks for the iPhone 2007, and CNET Top 10 Apps from iPhoneDevCamp 2007 – Tilt World supports WeForest, an international organization dedicated to sustainable reforestation. Players of the game fund the planting of WeForest trees in the real world!

Virtual Farmhopping Game Let’s Would-Be Farmers Benefits Endangered Species

Much like the crowd-managed farm idea of MyFarm.com, the new green entrepreneurial Farmhopping network has developed as a way for people to get involved in remote farming. This time from Bulgaria, Farmhopping lets users part-own and manage a farm using an interactive web platform.

The site brings together real life farmers with sustainable farms to share and would-be virtual farmers who want to buy farm products online. Using a game-like interface, users purchase animals and then help to decide how to milk and sheer the critters and things like that. Farmers also reward the virtual farmers for their achievements with offline privileges like free farm stays and the opportunity to receive organic produce.

Users, who pay a monthly fee, learn how to sustainably take care of the animals while receiving the satisfaction of supporting local, organic farmers. The fees help to cover monthly expenses for the farmer and protects endangered animal species as well, which is one of the main goals of the project.

From highway jersey barriers made from recycled tires to post-disaster relief transitional housing that comes in a rain barrel, the students of UW didn’t disappoint! Check out the projects that received top billing from both UW engineering students and business teams.

GIST – Concrete Highway Jersey Barriers

Dubbed the Green Innovative Safety Technologies (GIST) project, this green start-up has developed an alternative to concrete highway jersey barriers. Made from recycled tires, the GIST concept is to remove old tires from landfills and put them to good use by turning them into barriers instead. Designed by three UW engineering students and a Foster School of Business MBA student, GIST is supposed to improve the safety and eco-friendliness of highways.

“Last year alone in this country there were 300,000,000 used automotive tires thrown away with no good secondary purpose. That’s where we come in. The GIST solution uses proprietary, rubber-recycling technology,” says MBA student Ricky Holm. “We have designed a recycled alternative to concrete lane separation devices. Not only is our product environmentally friendly, it is more aesthetically pleasing, safer for vehicle occupants and it increases the safety of people living near highways.”

The team won the $10,000 grand prize for this green entrepreneurial idea.

Barrels of Hope – Post-Disaster Relief Transitional Housing

One of the most immediate needs in post-disaster regions is quick and easy housing for displaced residents. Barrels of Hope is looking to address this need with their sturdy, durable, sustainable housing solution that ships in a rain barrel!

The kits include the materials a family would need to build their own earth-bag home. This is done by filling polypropylene sandbags with soil and crushed concrete from ruined buildings, which are then used as bricks. The barrel is also hooked up to the house after it is complete to collect rainwater.

Each kit contains enough bags and other materials to build a 10 x 10 structure, including 500 polypropelene bags, 2 rolls of barbed-wire, strapping to hurricane proof the roof and fittings to attach the rain barrel to the gutter system. The barrels also ship with a Team Leader to manage the build and train people on how to use the materials to build their own homes.

“We’ve developed a safe, affordable, environmentally friendly house that can fit inside of a small rain barrel. Organizations such as USAID, American Red Cross, World Vision International and Habitat for Humanity raised nearly $4.5 billion for the relief efforts to Haiti after the earthquake struck in 2010. Unfortunately, there were no truly transitional and scalable shelter solutions at the time. Stuck with the next best option, nearly half of the 200,000 families who lost their homes in the earthquake are still living in the tents that they received nearly two years ago. Our houses are earthquake and hurricane-resistant. With disasters continuing to occur… it’s time that we change the way that we approach post-disaster response,” says Ryan Scott, MBA student.

The team won the $5,000 second prize for their green entrepreneurial invention.

Two social entrepreneurs have recently introduced simple, yet astoundingly effective systems that can be used by women living in developing countries to collect and carry clean water. Many women and children living in water-stressed African regions are forced to travel an average of 3.5 miles (5.6 km) daily with up to 15 liters (5.3 gallons) of water on their backs. That’s an incredible physical burden and an extreme drain on productivity. Having better water-carrying solutions can minimize both the physical pain and the time waste these women and children face.

Wello WaterWheel

Wello is a social venture focused on finding ways to effectively deliver clean water in developing regions. They have chosen to reframe the issue in terms of an opportunity to reinvent the wheel. Their goal is to develop a system that is both an income-generating tool for families living in poverty, as well as a highly effective way to collect and transport potable water.

Designed by social entrepreneur, Cynthia Koenig, the Wello WaterWheel is essentially a barrel with a handle for pushing or pulling. The barrel can carry up to 25 gallons (94.6 liters) of water – a volume that weighs 200 pounds (90 kg) and is up to five times more than the average woman can carry on her head. Not only does the WaterWheel make it much less painful to transport clean water, it also frees up more of their time which they can use to be productive in work or school. And because it is ruggedly built, almost anyone can use the WaterWheel over even the toughest terrain.

Wello is just a few weeks away from releasing WaterWheel 2.0 after nine months of research and countless trips to fetch water. Watch their website for more information! In the future, they hope to add features such as filtration systems and add-on drop irrigation kits. There’s even talk of creating a cell phone charger that would use the wheel’s rotation to charge a battery!

WaterWear Backpack

Developed as a collaboration between social entrepreneurs and an industrial packaging manufacturer Greif, the WaterWear backpack is a safe, easy way for people to transport their water. One of the concerns addressed by Greif is that people living in the developing world often inadvertently use secondhand containers that previously held poisonous compounds. Exposure to these substances through water stored in the used containers can cause severe health concerns. Greif also wanted to create a design that was both collapsible and lightweight so that the carrier would be easy on the body, unlike some other water carrying devices that put too much strain on the upper portion of the back.

Greif’s CEO, David Fischer, is a cancer survivor and a former chemical industry professional. He had this to say about the dangers of contaminated products:

“These containers used [to transport water] oftentimes have been used with paint, fuels, pesticides. Being from a packaging company, I know those packages with tight-knit enclosures on top are impossible to get clean.”

As part of the Clinton Global Initiative’s water action group, Greif wanted to develop an affordable, safe water carrying solution, and they’ve done just that. The WaterWear backpacks cost somewhere around $5.50 to $6 to distribute for disaster relief, with 2,000 packs already handed out in four communities in Haiti, and another 1,000 headed to Guatemala. They come in 20 liter (5.3 gallon) or 15 liter (3.9 gallon) models.

For women starting a new green business, there are plenty of resources available, including your local small business resource center, SCORE.org, networking groups, and meetups related to sustainable endeavors. While there are so many more ways to connect, both online and offline, at the end of the day, business still boils down to relationships.

For this reason, some say that networking is still the key to business success. Here are some networking tips from 3 women of color in the green business sector:

Connect with Successful Business People Who Practice What They Preach

Connect with business women in your area who are successful and who “practice what they preach” towards the triple bottom line of people, planet, and profits.

May Hsu, who’s in the top 5% of residential Realtors in the nation and focuses exclusively on eco-friendly properties, suggests five ways to expand your network:

Get involved with your local community and get to know other green businesses around your area.

Go to your city website and there’s always community recycling events, e-waste collection, farmers market schedule, and green building classes for residents.

Join your local chamber of commerce and/or professional associations – you will be connected to all the businesses in the city. You will have an opportunity to promote your business and also you can cater to other businesses that may need your services/ products.

Be ready to give a simple 30 second talk when people ask about your business. Remember most people will not understand what “green” means, you have to specify, such as “my product is made of non-toxic materials so it is safe for children to put in their mouths” or “my service uses e-signatures so it is fast and efficient, you don’t need to waste time and money printing paper”.

Build your business on the benefits of being green. Be able to complete this sentence: “My service/product is green because ___ , this is to help you _______.”

Make it Green and Great

When evaluating, keep in mind that just because something is a “green” business doesn’t automatically mean it will be a good business, especially in service-based companies. Hsu recommends that women “don’t have a business just because your product or service is “green” — it has to be more than that.” She explains that “fulfilling my client’s needs and expectation is the priority, which is selling their house for the highest value possible as fast as possible. The greening of my service is secondary.”

Understand the existing market need and consider your unique way you will fulfill the need in a more efficient, valuable, and effective way. For example, locally-produced goods may be more cost-efficient. Recycled or upcycled products might be a solution to a need for materials. A totally electronic or online version of an existing service may be more easy-to-use for today’s wired consumer. Innovate and find ways to develop a greener option to an existing choice.

Licensed in California since 2004, May Hsu (known as GreenandGorgeous in her video blogs and networks) has successfully sold condominiums and luxurious estates in the San Gabriel Valley. She is inspired to be a purpose-driven professional and greens her business and her lifestyle by being a part of organizations such as Built it Green, Ecobroker International, USGBC, and Habitat for Humanity. May oversees the green department at Treeline Realty and Investment Inc., where sustainability and creativity is the new real estate sales and marketing.

Establish Trust and Friendship in the Same Tribe

As you build your green network, you establish trust and friendship with others in the same “tribe.” Rana Sabeh, founder of the Orange County Green Market, highly encourages women to work as a part of a tight community. “It really helps to have a few close confidantes to give you trusted advice or tell it like it is even if you don’t think you want to hear it,” she recommends.

Think about the “Big Picture”

For many green entrepreneurs, a challenge is working “on” the business as well as working “in” the business. Sabeh explains that during the startup phase of creating the Orange County Green Market, “my biggest challenge has been zooming out of close-up mode and looking at the bigger picture – analyzing what hasn’t worked and why, then coming up with other strategies that will work better.”

You’ll want to consider ways to make your business be a part of a larger eco-system of green and sustainable products and services available in your community. This is tough when you’re a newbie or novice business owner. Sabeh explains that “you have to break through the fear and doubt and especially be aware of the sneaky doubtful voice in your head. Even if you think you’re trying, try harder. Then stop trying and do. Ask yourself, “Have I really and truly done everything I can, and have I done my best?” You’ll usually find you can do more.”

Rana Sabeh, proprietor at HealthyBargains.net, is the founder of the Orange County Green Market. The mission of the OC Green Market is to provide a location for local merchants to sell a variety of green products and services, and to also raise awareness of holistic, alternative and complimentary therapies. By offering an ability to “buy local”, community members spend and keep dollars within Orange County and continue to strengthen the fabric of the community, support family-run businesses and farms, reduce pollution, and create local jobs.

Be a Resource to your Community

As green businesswomen, you have an opportunity to share your knowledge and to promote your position as an eco-friendly and environmentally sustainable leader through reaching out, informing customers and suppliers, and educating the local community:

Consider offering flyers or an informational board focused on eco-conscious topics

Offer a resource section on your website

Start, help create, or participate in a directory of other conscious green women-owned businesses in your area

Participate in green-friendly events organized through your store

Offer your offices as a meeting space for sustainably-oriented non-profits

Share your story at the local Green Chamber of Commerce, Eco-Tuesday, or GreenBusinessNetwork.org event

Create a podcast, video diary, blog, or ongoing article series about the importance of choosing green

While you educate, don’t forget to tell the “story” behind your green product or service. For example, as a television producer, correspondent, and columnist, Emmy-award winning Bianca Alexander provides heavily-researched information and resources about the “untold stories” of people of color within the green and environmental justice movement. Alexander focuses on providing tips about “conscious living” within the African-American, Hispanic, and Asian communities. Her story on food deserts — where lower-income neighborhoods do not have equal access to fresh produce and low-cost healthy foods — was awarded the 2009 Annenberg Fellowship.

Bianca Alexander is an Emmy award-winning journalist and co-CEO of Conscious Planet, a green production company. She is the anchor of Conscious Living, a multi-platform news series highlighting the latest in sustainable, eco-friendly living, and Soul of Green, covering untold stories about people of color in the green and environmental justice movements. A licensed attorney with degrees from Princeton and The University of Virginia Law School, as well as a certified yoga instructor, Bianca has appeared regularly as a spokesperson and green/health reporter for ABC, NBC and WGN news shows around the country and as a host on networks like Lifetime, Tv One, and Fox.

That’s right, these two social enterprises have taken something incredibly violent and destructive and turned it into a source for good by transforming former symbols of war and conflict into accessories meant for peace and sustainability. Not only do these social enterprises help recycle used bombs – which in itself is incredibly sustainable – they also help to create employment and profits based on concepts of healing and reconciliation.

Undetonated Laotian Bombs Turn Bangle – peaceBOMB

During the 1960s and 70s, hundreds of millions of bombs were dropped on Laos over a 9-year time span known as the Secret War intended to stop the spread of communism. Today, 30% of those unexploded ordinances (UXOs) remain in the countryside, posing a threat to local inhabitants and the environment. It is estimated that it may take up to 800 years to remove all of these bombs.

But peaceBOMB is working to create a market for the materials contained in UXOs by developing a line of beautiful recycled aluminum jewelry. Based on techniques developed by a loan man who started collecting scrap metal, including UXOs, and turning it into hand-sculpted spoons, peaceBOMB provides employment for local residents in a number of ways. To start, they buy back the bombs from people who find them, thereby helping to make the countryside safer and UXO-free. Then they employ artisan families to melt down and transform the aluminum from the bombs into bangles, spoons, cufflinks, charm bracelets, earrings, and necklaces. Each one of a kind peace is hand crafted and then packaged in a woven organic cotton pouch with a story card.

From Nuclear Bombs to Peace Bronze – From War to Peace

From War to Peace is another social enterprise connecting war with art with their jewelry made from disarmed and recycled nuclear weapon systems. Based on the principle that war is failure and that peace is triumph, this green business believes in turning symbols of destruction into art that expresses sentiments of reconciliation.

Founded by Paul and Sandee Orgren in the US, From Peace to War takes disarmed nuclear missile systems and recovers the copper to create Peace Bronze. They also make use of recycled silver and gold for plating their unique jewelry pieces. This Made in America company also gets inspiration from local heritage by employing local artisans to make each piece of wearable art.

This social enterprise is listed in the GreenDeals.org Top 6 for 2012.

And the secret to making them effective is simple: getting them high in search results or, in other words, search engine optimization (SEO).

What SEO does is boost your press release in search engine rankings so that it’s easy to be found by Web users—that way, when someone goes searching for say, sustainable packaging or eco-friendly flooring, your company’s news release is front and center. To journalists and consumers alike, press releases found in search results are becoming a trusted and reputable resource—even more so than traditional emailed press releases.

As David Meerman Scott writes in his bestseller The New Rules of Marketing & PR, “Something like 25,000 press releases have been sent to me, resulting in no stories. Instead, I think about a subject that I want to cover in a column or an article, and I check out what I can find on blogs and through search engines.”

In addition to media exposure, search-friendly online press releases can give your green business powerful backlinks to your site, a way to get your message to new customers and more content and links for your site’s press and news section.

With that in mind, consider the following tips for making your online press release search-friendly!

1. Research Keywords.
It’s as true for companies making eco-friendly grocery bags as it is for those designing websites for veterinarians: before you ever write your press release, do your keyword research. Keywords are essential to making sure that your potential clients find you–and by using the right keywords related to your green business, you ensure your company is the one people find when they’re looking for your services.

2. Write a Search-Friendly Headline & Subheadline.
In terms of search engines, headline is key—it’s the most heavily weighed element in your entire press release. To write a headline that gets you noticed by search engines, keep it concise (under 65 characters, advises MarketWire), include your company name and your top keywords, be interesting (ask yourself what would grab your attention) and make it relevant—the headline should appropriately convey what the press release will be about. Likewise, consider including a subheadline that incorporates secondary keyword phrases early in your press release.

3. Avoid Specialized Jargon.
The purpose of a press release is getting information to customers, so your content needs to read accordingly. Stay away from highly detailed technical explanations and, whether you’re writing about solar panels or sustainable construction, make the language easy to understand. Be direct, straightforward and clear. If you’re in doubt about the readability of your press release, ask an outsider to read it before you publish to see if it really makes sense.

4. Optimize the First 250 Words.
Work to get your main message within the first 250 words of your content—not only will this make you more relevant to search engines, but it also will help you communicate better to readers so that they won’t lose interest and will continue reading throughout the whole press release. Likewise, use your most important keywords early in the content, preferably in the first sentence, to make sure they’re picked up by search engines.

5. Include Keywords in Anchor Text Links.
Because online press releases can include links, you can use this to benefit your website’s SEO. Use keywords in the anchor text of links, at most three or four times throughout your content, and point to pages imbedded within your site. Not only will this benefit your SEO but also it will point readers to your website.

6. Add Images.
Major search engines like Google and Bing will include images from your press release in search results—and because results with images are much more likely to be clicked on, this can greatly affect your traffic. In addition to putting your logo in the press release, choose an image that is interesting, attractive and relevant to your topic, and make sure it has a clear file name that describes the image and incorporates a keyword. You may also wish to provide a descriptive caption.

7. Optimize Your Boilerplate.
The boilerplate is the brief company overview that appears at the end of a press release, basically an “about us.” It usually sums up who your company is and what products you offer to those readers who may have had no previous knowledge of it. To optimize this section of your press release, keep it brief (within one paragraph in size), answer the basic questions new readers would have about your company and include one or two strategic hyperlinks to key pages on your site.

Bio
Shanna Mallon is a writer for Straight North, a Web development Chicago company that provides SEO, Web development and other marketing services for B2B clients. She has been writing professionally since 2004, moving from newspaper reporting to real estate marketing to her current role as a Web copywriter and food blogger.

Wembé Organic, Sustainable Rainforest Skincare and Handmade Soaps

Wembé is a new organic, vegan, earth-friendly, wild organic bar soap and skincare company working to make a difference for you and for those creating their artisan products. Their product line is diverse, including things like Organic Loofah Soap made with thyme and almond essential oils, Organic Passion Fruit Soap infused with fresh maracuja and cupassu butter, and Organic Black Clay Soap for an at-home mud bath spa treatment. They’ve also recently launched an Organic Moisturizing Stick that provides nourishing moisture for the face and other delicate areas, made with essential oils, rosehip oil, and beeswax.

Check out these health and environmental attributes: all products are free of silicone, petroleum products, parabens, sulfates, phenoxythanol, polyethylene glycol, synthetic fragrances, and artificial dyes. They are also made from organic, locally-grown plants in Paraguay (principally from the Amazon rainforest where they are harvested sustainably), and are gluten free, too.

And Wembé is working hard to contribute to the Paraguayan communities with which it works. Despite the fact that local labor regulations are lax and poorly enforced, Wembé sets the bar extremely high. They hire only 20 people and pay them wages that are 20% to 30% above market standards. They also provide training to help each worker advance, and ensure all safety precautions are taken to protect the employees and the local environment.

Plus, the plant is powered only by hydroelectric power and everything is made from local spring water. And all of their products adhere to cruelty-free and vegan principles, the company is a Green America Approved Business, and they’ve signed the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics agreement

This green business was listed in the GreenDeals.org Top 6 for 2012.

PRIMAVERA, Certified Organic Skincare for Bringing Nature Closer

Another nature-based skincare company, PRIMAVERA has recently become available to American consumers, offering you the chance to incorporate nature into your everyday life through their certified organic line of skincare and aromatherapy products. With a claim that their projects contain the highest certified organic ingredient percentage available on the market, their four product lines – body care, face care, wellness therapy, and home fragrance – offer an immerse-yourself-in-nature experience in the privacy of your own bathroom.

PRIMAVERA ensures the natural, organic qualities of their ingredients in several ways. First, they work with 18 organic farms worldwide, all of which must meet their stringent environmental standards. That means they stress biodiversity, crop rotation, chemical-free pest control and soil amendments, and GMO-free seeding. The ingredient list for the entire company is also relatively short, consisting of only 125 different components, including essential oils used for centuries by traditional cultures, seed oils with vital nutrients, and plant extracts each with unique health benefits.

They also ensure that all of their ingredients are certified by Natrue, an international nonprofit association that provides a labeling standard to ensure consumers that products are as natural as possible. And to top it all off, they ensure no animal testing, and use eco-conscientious packaging such as carton-free packaging to reduce waste and recyclable glass bottles.
