Using Social Bookmarks to Market Your Green Business

If you’re looking for effective online green marketing strategies to help spread the word about your green business, it’s time to consider social bookmarking sites.

Social bookmarking sites, such as Delicious, Digg, StumbleUpon and a whole host of others, are some of the fastest growing and most visited sites on the web. They receive vast amounts of traffic daily from users all over the world. When you consider each user a potential customer or supporter, these sites create a wealth of opportunity for your green business blog or website.

What is Social Bookmarking?

Have you ever shared a link to a website or article you’ve found interesting, whether it be through email, tweetsor by sharing it via Facebook? Maybe you’ve looked at a link on Facebook and clicked on ‘Like’? Congratulations. You’ve participated in social bookmarking.

How Does Social Bookmarking Work?

Social bookmarking is a way for users to organize, manage, search and share resources online. In a social bookmarking system, users bookmark links they want to share. Because many social bookmarking services provide web feeds for their lists of bookmarks, whenever a new bookmark is saved, shared, and tagged by other users, it appears at the top of the queue, immediately visible by all of the site’s viewers.

Social bookmarking is also considered an essential search engine optimization (SEO) strategy because it creates backlinks. Search engines rank websites using a series of complex algorithms that factor in the number of incoming and outgoing links, or backlinks, each page has. One basic premise of SEO is that the more backlinks your site has, the higher it will rank on individual search engines. Each new link is an opportunity for search engine spiders to find your site, helping users to find you.

Six Essential Social Bookmarking Strategies

If want to use social bookmarking in your social media marketing plan, here are a few strategies that can help you get the most out of it:

1. Use your social networks.

Facebook and Twitter may be more commonly known as social networking websites, but you can also use them for social bookmarking. In fact, a good social bookmarking strategy should start with regular link sharing on Facebook and Twitter. Those sites are your best bet for creating a community around your business or cause, and engaging and interacting with them.

2. Join several of the most popular social bookmarking sites.

As previously mentioned, there are a vast number of social bookmarking sites out there. Join a few of the most popular and use them daily. Be sure to do your research on the site you choose to join, as each may have their own usage guidelines. For example, standard Twitter etiquette suggests that if you follow someone’s feed, they’ll follow you. On some sites, quality of interaction prevails over quantity. On others it’s the opposite.

3. Subscribe to a service that does the social bookmarking for you.

With so many sites to follow, you could spend all day bookmarking your own links. Rather than visiting each site independently and submitting your own links, some sites, FeedBurner or FriendFeed, will do the work for you. You submit your link to them and they then resubmit it to whichever social bookmarking sites you choose.

4. Know what works.

A good web traffic report will tell you exactly how users are landing on your site. Use some form of analytics to find out what is working and spend your energy there. Consider that different times of day, different keywords, and different titles will work better than others and experiment.

5. Bookmark all your pages.

Don’t just wait until you have new content to share. If you want to drive traffic to your site, then you should be bookmarking all of your pages, and doing so regularly. This ensures that they appear at the top of the aforementioned queue and have the best chance of getting seen.

6. Bookmark all your activity.

In addition to bookmarking all of your website’s pages and updates, you can also bookmark other online activities you’re doing, such as eZine, HubPages, YouTube, Facebook and any other links you create. Be sure to take advantage of the tagging tools these sites offer to make sure each bookmark has the best chance of getting seen.

Incorporating social bookmarking into your online marketing strategy is a fast, free and effective way to drive customers to your green business blog or website. But be prepared to be patient. Setting up accounts and links can take time and some require daily maintenance. However, once you get up and running, you’ll start seeing more traffic in no time.
