Last week, Green Marketing TV caught up with the staff of green marketing firm RelevanSi to get some great insider tips on green marketing. This week, they graciously shared advice for marketing students and professionals interested in a career in green marketing!
Green marketing companies are few and far between. How does one get a job in a green marketing agency? What do you look for in an ideal candidate?
Our ideal job candidate is someone who is not only passionate and committed, but also creative and innovative. We look for individuals who thrive on creating new ideas and who will consistently work to take their projects to the next level. Ideally, they would also be actively involved in the green movement in some way. At RelevanSi, we believe that if you are passionate about living a sustainable lifestyle you should try to do this in every area of your life, including your work.
What advice do you have for college graduates who want to get into the green marketing industry?
We highly recommend that college students complete internships that are relevant to their desired career field prior to completing their studies and entering the work force. For someone wishing to enter the green marketing industry, these internships would ideally center around both marketing and the green movement, but an internship that covers one or the other could also be very valuable in developing an individual’s skills and resume.
Beyond internships, we like to emphasize that college graduates educate themselves and stay informed about their desired field by reading green blogs, informational articles, and green news, etc. Finally, connecting with others in the green community via social media, local green events, and other types of networking forums is a great way to exchange ideas and meet others involved in green businesses.
What books and resources do you recommend for people who are interested in a green marketing career track?
The Internet offers countless resources for people who are interested in a green marketing career track. Linkedin, for example, is a great resource for developing your online business profile and connecting with contacts in the green community. Sites such as Treehugger, GreenBiz, or GreenTech, are also great for staying up-to-date on news and information about the green movement. Starting a green blog and connecting to other bloggers is another great way to stay educated and interact with people involved in the green community online.
Don’t overlook your local green community either. Keep an eye out for local green events, such as GreenDrinks – a networking event that takes place in communities around the world. Books can also be a great resource, although due to the dynamic nature of the green industry, the Internet will usually offer more up-to-date information. Try Green Metropolis, by David Owen, for a good overview of sustainability (but don’t forget to tweet about it afterward!).
