Facebook Places is the newest entrant into the emerging location applications field, which is currently dominated by popular apps such as Foursquare and Gowalla. Geolocation apps, which allow users to share where they are as well as what they are doing, are the hot new trend in social media, and with more than half a billion potential users, Facebook Places cannot be discounted as an emerging player in the field.
Unlike Foursquare, which has put a lot of effort into courting businesses interested in the power of geolocation marketing, Facebook Places currently has no strong marketing features for businesses. However, it’s likely that it is only a matter of time before these appear, and meanwhile, getting in on the ground floor can help your green business have a strong presence on Facebook Places from the start.
If you want to get your green business into Places, the first thing you need to do is see if your business already exists. You can search for your business in the search bar at Facebook or use the Facebook iPhone app to check in while you’re at work.
How To Add Your Green Business To Facebook Places
If your green business isn’t listed yet, you’ll want to create a new place.
To create a new place on Facebook Places, follow these steps:
- Access the Places application on your iPhone or other supported device.
- Click “Check In.”
- Click the “Add” button to the left of the Places Names search box.
- Add a name for the new Place. You can also add an optional description. Then click the “Add” button at the bottom right of the page.
- You will then have the option to write a description of what you are doing at the new Place, and/or tag any friends who are there with you.
- Click the “Check In” button to share your visit.
Any Place you create is public, so other people can see it while browsing Facebook or the Places application.
Claiming Your Green Business on Facebook Places
Once your green business exists on Places, you’ll want to claim it. Start the process by visiting the page for your business’s Place. This is not the same as your business’s Facebook page, if you have one. Click the link at the bottom of the page asking “Is This Your Business?” to claim it.
An alert box will pop up asking, “Is this your business?” Agree.
This will take you to a page where Facebook asks for information to confirm that you are the business owner. This includes your Federal Employee Identification Number (if applicable) and some form of official documentation, such as:
- Articles of Certificate of Incorporation
- Certificate of Formation
- Local Business License, or
- Better Business Bureau Accreditation
Once you’ve sent all the information and documentation, you will have to wait for Facebook to confirm your claim. This can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks.
After your claim is approved, you can take “ownership” and fill in more information about your green business on Facebook Places, including adding a logo and other information.
Congratulations, you’ve just claimed your green business on Facebook Places!
